  2. Gods! The weathering is top notch. But it's still really the skin I find beautiful on these.
Fantastic work! I applaud you :)

    1. Thank you sir. Painting proper skin, after the pale legion psychopaths is so very rewarding :)

  3. Fantastic model. I especially like the wolf for some reason - you've made it feel less cartoony somehow.

My only gripe would be that the grey minis doesn't really stand out from the grey stone of the bases. Unless the effect is intended?

    1. Thanks Jeff. I also really like the wolf. It's a stunning sculpt, and I think painting it realistically with different areas of the fur having genuinely different hue worked out well. Good that it did, because I have five more to build and paint. And want each to be unique, yet look like a real wolf.

That gripe is in part due to photography. I have used MIG city dirt and flat earth pigments to establish the base hue, so it is very brown grey and has a clear step change from both the Sky Warrior's and the Wolf's hue. And like everything with me that is very intentional. When the wolves go war, in art, they always bring the cold and the grey with them :)

  4. They are very grey and "moony" indeed. Especially with the black background the models seem to exist in the cold emptiness of space. Shield is super nice with the plentiful contrast. Elsewhere throughout the model it is quite monotonal and a few eye-catchers exist in the traditional sense. Although it has been growing on you since the beginning of "shades offe greye", this is now a super limited palette, and the airbrush technique only serves to further drive the point home. It will take some time to digest this style. It is certainly defined and new!

    1. Thanks mate. I'd actually argue a few of your comments. Where Shaddes off Greye had a bunch of colors, each with grey added in, here I have a lot less, but full intense skin and reds for example. Very different aesthetic! Almost night and day, without pun intended.

I also nearly felt there are too many eye catchers. So much detail, bone, fur, gem, metal, skin, and if it wasn't for tying many of them together in categories of color and feel, the model would be a mess with out focal core. I'm not sure if the Airbrush plays a part here.

Thanks for the comments! I'm really happy to engage in this level of opinions and viewpoints about the direction. I would jokingly add, that after seven years of screaming green Space Marines, I can see why this lot will take some digesting to do.

  5. Migs it's really fun to see the vitality this new project has given you. You're definitely putting in the hours and it sure shows!

I like the cold and desolate feel of the palette. It reminds me of Norwegian and Scandinavian folklore (the black & white drawings and general feel) though I guess that it's not been a source of inspiration for you. Still, this is by far my favorite project on the interwebs so keep going :)

One thing that hasn't been mentioned is the strong red. It's almost like fresh blood and really enforce the "hunter" feel of this piece. Though one thing with the eyes on the wolf. Are they meant to be the reflective green you see in pitch black? I guess it's the picture cause it's not showing that well.

    1. Thanks! Well, I am Finnish and grew up with Scandinavian folklore, children's book and general aesthetics, let alone in the seasons of utter cold and darkness and endless days of the summer. So indirectly or directly that is one key inspiration.

The eyes on the wolf and the Sky Warriors is black metallic. This wonderful dark metallic paint that makes it as if the dark pit is staring at you what ever the angle. In the fluff the wolf eyes are described as golden, while Altansar Eldar and other good forces stuck in the Eye of Terror have black eyes. Putting the two together here. :)

  6. What strikes me with these models and also about the comments on colours is that what truely sets these Marines apart is the scale. They are not true-scale marines. They are bigger, more bold, more elaborate. They are beautifully simple in their massiveness. Colours ARE important. However, for these models it seems to me that the big challenge in the painting process is actually not to go over the top, but to choose the right colours to make the models speak for themselves.

    1. Very much so! In the new Space Wolves codex, an applicant sees their Bio Mass grow by 80% when they received the Canis Helix, and that on top of sturdy, tall, scandinavianesque physique of what I imagine the people of Fenris possess. Astartes are described as warriors gods in all the background. This is where I start. I want them to feel and look like Warrior Gods. "True-scale or Art-scale" can be missing the point. It's not about numbers, it's about expressing the correct feeling. And when I look at these marines and the odd henchmen I'm building, that message is really strong.

  7. Fantastic work Migs! I am really impressed with the amount of depth you can achieve with the greys. His armour in particular is stunning. I love how the wolf's coat has noticeably different shades of grey. While maybe a little strange, I think my favorite part of the paintjob is the white eye of the wolf. It is absolutely chilling and almost brings about a haunting vibe to the entire model!

I am looking forward to see how this project progresses. Your rapid progress is an inspiration. I my need to attempt my own Space Marine conversion from one of the Primarch models...
